As part of the evolution of our 1:1 iPad deployment, in 2012-13 we are adopting iTunes U as our digital learning platform.
What is iTunes U?
iTunes U is a free service provided by Apple to schools. Teachers can create courses on iTunes U that are available to the public and courses that are private to the school.
How does Cedars use iTunes U?
We use iTunes U in two ways. Firstly, we create courses for our teachers' professional development and we make those courses available to the world.
Secondly, we use private iTunes U courses for all of our Secondary subjects. This allows teachers to deliver audio, video, text, apps and documents directly to a pupil's iPad.
How does iTunes U improve teaching and learning?
iTunes U provides one central app where pupils can keep all their lesson materials, make notes and track homework assignments. If pupils are absent from school, they can still receive all the lesson materials and content. If a teacher is absent, pupils can receive the lesson from the teacher in the form of text, audio or video on their iPad.
We don't see iTunes U as a replacement for the classroom experience. It provides a single central location for class documentation, notes and materials on a pupil's and we expect it will enhance and extend our pupils' learning.
iTunes U for Parents
For parents who have an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, we can provide you with links to subscribe to the courses your children are taking to help you keep informed with the progress of the class. This will also automatically notify you when your child is assigned homework. Soon after the beginning of the school year, we will send this information by email.
