Today we had a meeting with the provisional committee for the proposed railway between Liverpool and Manchester. We met at the Town Hall in Manchester and heard from characters including a hunting enthusiast:

An unemployed engineer:
A Manchester wool merchant:
A Liverpool manufacturer:
A blacksmith:
A stage coach inn keeper:
A shop keeper:
A canal barge driver:
An eccentric citizen from a village on the outskirts of Manchester:
A farmer:
An environmentalist:
At the end of our meeting, the citizens voted- in favour of the railway...
