And then, at last, we got to the Menin Gate ceremony.
The pictures do not do justice to the solemnity and moment of this occasion.
Last Post has been played here every night since 1929, apart from during the Second World War. The ceremony begins with a prayer and silence. The buglers play Last Post and the poem 'We shall remember them' is read. Then wreaths are layed. Johnny Jarvie, Lyle Horne and Brett Gibson were selected to represent the school in the laying of a wreath. The boys did the school proud. Each of them were affected by the occasion. Our tour guide had said she felt privileged to be associated with Cedars School tonight. Miss Rukin saw her old History teacher who was there with some S3s from her old school.
It has been a day, and an evening, that we shall always remember.
